River Roy (lower) - Trees

Paddled lower Roy today.  Few new trees have fallen into the river after the wild windy weather.  All avoidable but be careful as it's not always clear how far they extend until you get near.  One thing to watch is on the last rapid - between the road bridge and the railway bridge.  Not everyone does this, it is after an informal take out which some go for (a river right scramble up to the carpark in Roy Bridge).  If you paddle on to the normal take out (as per the guidebook) this takes you to the final rapid.  The usual line down far river right has several trees in it and did not look like a good option even at a medium flow.  One to watch with big groups / less experienced paddlers.  Easy to avoid though at medium or high flows by running river left.

Lower Roy Trees

Additional information...

Danger Lower Roy from chrisdickinson on Mon Sep 20, 2010 8:39 am

A brand new and very large tree has wedged against the existing tree in the right (main) channel of the last rapid on the Lower Roy.
This makes a passage through Railway Bridge Rapid extremely hazardous, and this tree could easily entrap and drown an unsuspecting paddler. It is made worse by the fact that it is invisible until you come round the corner. One eddy exists river left beforehand, after the first part of the rapid, beforte the said bend. A chicken run goes river left from there and is the only safe option at this time. The jammed tree still has all its branches and leaves and probably arrived in last Monday's flood. It may or may not shift in the next mega flood so watch this space. You have been warned.  Photograph pending.....................
