Rafting in Scotland

Rafting in Scotland

Hi there,

My girlfriend & I  are planning a trip up North in a couple of weeks.  I've heard various things about what the white water rafting is like in Scotland - where abouts should we go to get the best rafting?

I presume some rivers are more exciting for rafting than others, so it'd be good to go to the right place!  Appreciate any advice from 'proper' paddlers...

Thanks.

Best river in Scotland for rafting?

Hey there,

There are a few options for rafting in Scotland and a number of activity companies who provide trips.  In terms of the 'best' rafting it's a bit subjective.  Most rafting companies work on fairly friendly rivers i.e. not much over Grade 3/3+ - this is safer for them and the customer but is also generally exciting enough for the majority of people as usually their experience of whitewater is pretty limited.

Rafting is also largely restricted to dam release rivers in the summer i.e. rivers with guaranteed flow on set days.

Possibly the 'best' raft trips in Scotland regularly offered by a number of companies would be the river Garry north of Fort William or the river Tummel near Dunkeld.  I think the Moriston and Orchy have also been occasionally rafted and these are definitely harder/more exciting rivers.

Compared to what they raft in Africa, NZ and even the continent, rafting in Scotland is gentler but consequently the risks are generally lower.

From a paddler's perspective, (and not recommended commercially :o),  I reckon my top two rivers for rafting would be:

  • Upper Spean on 6 pipes+
  • Orchy 5 and above on the guage

What do others reckon?........

You can't really beat

You can't really beat rafting on the Garry if you want to go out in Scotland.

I think most folk who go have an absolute blast.... I know theres a couple of decent companies in the Fort which offer trips.... Vertical Descents and Highland Activities are both worth contacting for a good time...

From a paddlers perspective.... Orchy or Upper Spean huge would indeed be fun!

I think the Nevis would probably be a good one too but i wouldn;t do scimitar!

Rafting

For sure the Garry is def worth the drive, Monster Activities based in The Great Glen Water Park are the closest to that section.

The Orchy on a good flow is an awesome 3/4 hr wilderness trip with amazing views and rapids.

The Bran from Amulree down to Trochry is also an amazing trip when its high !

Of course most ofthe rafting goes on at the mighty Tay as it always has water in it, thats of course if the Tummel is not releasing.

River Garry

Hi Johnny,

Come rafting with us on the Garry or the Roy mate. We are all paddlers as well as rafters and we have nice kit and good guides and we also run longer trips and run more of the rapids on the Garry lower down that others don't. Drop me an email and I'll sort you out a wee deal.

Cheers

Andy
